Description: 230,000 sq km of seismic data interpretation mapping over 28,000 seafloor seismic amplitude anomalies in the Gulf of Mexico using 3-D time-migrated seismic surveys. This mapping program means to understand the distribution of natural hydrocarbon seeps and the related benthic fauna, and to characterize other seafloor features related to the geological framework of the seafloor. These areas show anomalously high or low amplitude response over the background response, and include: Positive- Slow to moderate hydrocarbon seepage Negative- Rapid expulsion of sediment, brine, and hydrocarbons Mud volcano- Cones created by negative anomalies Confirmed mud volcano- Direct observation of mud volcanos Flow- Sediment flows from fast moving sediment or hydrocarbons Pockmark- Circular to oval depressions created by the rapid removal of sediment Cretaceous- Outcrops of Cretaceous-aged carbonate rock Lithologic- Outcrops of Cretaceous-aged carbonate rock Salt- Salt outcrops (not seep related) Slump- Downslope sediment flows Fan- Submarine channels and sand rich turbidite fans Confirmed organisms- Direct observation of chemosynthetic and coral communities Confirmed coral- Direct observation of benthic corals Confirmed gas hydrate- Direct observation of gas hydrate occurrences Confirmed gas- Direct observation of gas plumes Confirmed oil- Direct observation of oil seepage Possible oil positive- high positive oil seepage located under an oil slick Possible oil negative- low positive oil seepage located under an oil slick For more detailed information, and individual layers for download: http://www.boem.gov/Oil-and-Gas-Energy-Program/Mapping-and-Data/Map-Gallery/Seismic-Water-Bottom-Anomalies-Map-Gallery.aspx
